Seed department
, which manages the AI research and large language model (LLM) initiatives of the tech giant, has published three variations of its Seed-OSS-36B open-source AI model on

Hugging Face
, the largest platform for open-source AI development globally.

Seed-OSS-36B was developed with general-use and reasoning capabilities, along with features that cater to developers, including long-context window processing, as stated by ByteDance.

With a size of 36 billion parameters—used for training to enhance its performance—Seed-OSS-36B delivers impressive capabilities, despite its modest scale. Other Chinese firms have released open-source AI models with parameters significantly larger in count.

Referencing recent benchmark assessments, ByteDance indicated that its new AI model either equaled or exceeded the performance of similarly sized options from rivals such as Alibaba Cloud,

Google
and

OpenAI
, as well as its own Seed 1.6 model. Alibaba Cloud represents the AI and cloud service division of

Alibaba Group Holding
, the parent company of the South China Morning Post.

The introduction of Seed-OSS-36B AI by ByteDance highlights the ongoing efforts of Chinese AI firms to close the technological gap with their US counterparts through an open-source model, enabling third-party developers to utilize, adjust, and share the source code of AI frameworks.
